What is the RNR Craft show?

The Rock ‘n’ Roll Craft Show is the original alternative craft and music event in St. Louis! Since 2005, the organizers of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Craft Show have been gathering the craftiest artists and the rockinest musicians for one great weekend-long event!

The RRCS Mission:

RRCS dedicates itself to showcasing unique, usable items handcrafted from new and recycled materials; these items, including furniture, clothing, jewelry, musical instruments, glassware, magnets, knitware, fine art, etc., are the original creations of local and national crafters and won’t be found at traditional shopping venues! The organizers of RRCS are committed to giving all crafters—from the nascent gluer to the established professional crafter—an opportunity to show their wares and make a living at creating! RRCS is also a strong supporter of reusing and recycling; a majority of the items we include in our event are crafted from pre-used/owned materials.

Agile, Mobile, Hostile: A Year With Andre Williams

Agile, Mobile, Hostile: A Year With Andre Williams

Speaking of the SLIFF (and huge kudos to Jason Rerun for pointing this out), but this Andre Williams documentary will be playing there this coming Wednesday night! And for god’s sake, if you’re reading this blog, I hope to hell you know who Mr. Rhythm is, but just in case, I’ll attach a couple MP3s below… ;)

Agile, Mobile, Hostile: A Year With Andre Williams
Tricia Todd & Eric Mathes, U.S., 2008, 86 min.
Wednesday, Nov. 19, 7:15 p.m., Tivoli 3

Known as “Mr. Rhythm,” Andre Williams has recorded hit records (“Bacon Fat”), written hit songs (“Shake a Tail Feather”) and worked with such legends of the industry as Berry Gordy, Ike Turner and Stevie Wonder. But throughout his 72 years, Andre has also struggled with addiction, poverty, homelessness and the legal system. The film follows the alternately charming and maddening Andre on a fascinating, funny and distressing journey. Andre makes a declaration to the filmmakers – “I’m going to show you the right way, because I’ve gone so many wrong ways” – but as he moves from gig to gig, the mercurial singer all too often succumbs to temptation, risking dire consequences.

Shadowland

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Tonight at the Tivoli, the St. Louis Int’l Film Fest is showcasing Shadowland, a low-budget horror movie produced by an old friend of mine from high school and shot entirely in the St. Lous area (including Old Town St. Charles). The movie features music from St. Louis musicians including The 75s (“Finders Keepers”) and the 7 Shot Screamers (“Vampire”). Time is 10:30 p.m.

Shadowland
Wyatt Weed, U.S., 2008, 96 min.
Friday, Nov. 14, 10:30 p.m., Tivoli 1

Laura crawls from a pit at a construction site, beaten and bloody, apparently left for dead. With no memory of who or where she is, she sets off into the night, looking for answers and a way home. She soon finds herself hunted by a mysterious young man named Julian, and it isn’t clear if he intends to help her or kill her. Another of the highly polished homegrown productions featured in this year’s SLIFF, this fast-paced supernatural thriller prominently showcases the talents of St. Louis’ actors and crew members, and the diversity of its locations. With director Weed and producers Robert Clark and Gayle Gallagher.

Bring Back Mr. Motherfucker!

Thursday, May 1st, 2008

I just realized that this October will mark the tenth anniversary of the last Midwest Regional Music Festival (a.k.a. “MRMF,” or “Mr. Motherfucker” fest, as it some of us liked to call it). That’s the one that featured some 200 bands from all over the country playing in venues all over town that (supposedly) rivaled SXSW at the time. Its primary organizer/promoter was the Riverfront Times, back in the days when it was an independent local weekly entertainment rag with a much larger focus on local music than it has today. When the New Times bought the paper in 1999, giving Mr. Motherfucker the old heave-ho was one of its first major accomplishments (you might remember that was also when they moved the publication’s great local music section to the back… the old show listings used to be right in the centerfold and it was once a lot easier to just flip the paper open to it). Dead and buried, after only six years. So ever since then, St. Louis has been without a big, local, annual music festival that had the potential to attract bands and music lovers of every stripe from all over the country (and beyond). True, we still have some good local music festivals here every year (I even foolishly attempted to promote my own last fall, as you may recall), but none of them match MRMF in overall scope, size, magnitude, and potential as far as really putting St. Louis on the map as both a regional and national music mecca, and that’s sad, I think. If those of us that are part of the St. Louis music scene want to help put ourselves back on the national map, we should make a concerted effort to bring this festival back from the grave, or create a new one that’s similar. That would obviously need to be done without the (free) promotional and organizational assistance of the Riverfront Times (unless they, of course, could somehow convince the New Times to let them do it again). But now, ten years later, with the advent of blogging, podcasting and plenty of other new local music publications (not to mention a great new local record store in Apop), it seems to me there could be enough of the right kind of people here to make this happen again… that is, if we WANT to make it happen badly enough. What do YOU think?

Lodging Update for the Show-Me Blowout

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

We were able to get the Crowne Plaza Hotel downtown to give us a special rate of $89/room for the nights of October 12th and 13th. This is a savings of $20 off their regular room rate, so it’s a good deal, if not still a bit pricey (but hey, it’s a really nice hotel, too). But the big advantages of staying here is A) you’re downtown (lots to see), and B) you’re only 3.5 miles (less than 10 minutes) from Off Broadway. Just make sure you mention the Show-Me Blowout when calling in your reservation: (314) 621-8200

Now, if $89/night is still too much, we can also recommend the nearest Motel 6 at 6500 S. Lindbergh Blvd. in South St. Louis County, but that’s considerably further (9.4 miles to the venue) and isn’t really close to anything interesting, other than maybe Grant’s Farm. The normal single room rate here is just $51.99/night. They weren’t able to give us any sort of special room rate for this event, sorry. (314) 892-3664

Another thing you can do is to go to www.priceline.com and for a zip code type in St. Louis and then, after you search for hotels, look for the “name your price” link under “More Ways to Save” on the right side. Click that link, then on the next screen choose Downtown St. Louis, then either 3-Star or 2 1/2-Star Moderate-Plus. Then just put in $50 or $60 in the “Name Your Own Price” box and see what happens. You may end up at the Raddison, Ballpark Hilton, or the Sheraton. All nice hotels and downtown, which is cool, and within a few miles of the venue. Good luck.

The Geargrinders to Play the Blowout!

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Big news! If you haven’t already heard, taking The Honkeys’ spot headlining the second night of the Show-Me Blowout will be the return of THE GEARGRINDERS featuring Jeff Hess with a new lineup, which just so happens to include three members of said surf/instro band (Jason Edge, Exene Cervenka’s hubby and also guitarist in The Original Sinners; Micah Edge on organ; and Cullen McGrane on bass) as well as Ben Wah, St. Louis native now living in L.A., who’ll be flying in to play. Ben Wah was also in Hippies in Flames (St. Louis/Seattle) and is the current drummer for the Feederz (currently on hiatus) and played with them on their 2002 reunion LP and 2003 tour.

Anyway, it’s gonna be huge. If you don’t have your tickets yet, you should get them now, because all bets are on that this thing will sell out.

Blowout Update

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

Show-Me Blowout Update: The Honkeys have canceled. Jeff Positive got offered a gig to tour with a Thrill Jockey Records band in the UK the first half of October. Can’t say that I blame him, really, because it’s a great opportunity. I have to admit this bums me out a bit (this jockey isn’t the least bit thrilled, in other words), not only because I thought they really deserved to be on this bill (and would have good pull), but because I was away on vacation and missed their show at the RnR Prom and was just looking forward to seeing them perform again. Oh well, shit happens. So that means I’ll have to fill that void with another band. I have a few in mind, so I’ll let you know when everything’s confirmed and the updated lineup is ready to post.

The Mad Titans will be replacing Thee Hypnic Jerks at the Apop shindig Saturday afternoon.
