Well, we’re getting down to the wire now and I’ve officially run out of my screenprinted South Side for Obama tees. I’ve been so busy selling these the past week or so at The Royale that I haven’t even had a chance to post an update lately on how well they’ve been selling (sorry ’bout that). Anyway, there is a silver lining to this cloud, and that is you can now purchase a shirt with the above design through a new online store that I just set up at Spreadshirt.com, and there are even more shirt styles to choose from (including girlie tees)!
The best news about all of this is that I was able to raise over $1,600 for the Obama campaign from this little experiment! Thanks to everyone that bought one!!
UPDATE: Spreadshirt is offering free shipping on orders of $30 or more now through Nov. 24. Just use this coupon code when you place the order:

So far I’ve printed up 220 shirts and have sold 179 of them. The last remaining ones are either up at The Royale as I type this, or will be up there within the next few days. Once they’re gone, they’re gone. Unless I get a big last-minute request for a bunch of one size or something, I doubt seriously that I’ll be getting any more printed up. Right now the fundraising total for my South Side for Obama personal fundraising page is sitting at $987… not bad! I hope to have another $400 or so added to that total very soon, and more if people want to be especially generous and chip in more to the cause of helping to get Obama elected. So thanks to all of you who have purchased a shirt so far, and to those who haven’t, if you’d like one, you’d better get down to The Royale on S. Kingshighway in the next day or two or risk missing out completely.
Oh, and by the way, I updated the design slightly to include the Obama “O” logo and went with a navy blue screen on nice white/navy ringer tees. The first 128 were the Carolina blue Hanes shirts, and the other 92 were the white/navy Anvil ringers that look something like this:

A couple of weeks ago our friend Michelle dropped in on us from Seattle. It was at Michelle & David’s place that we stayed during our brief trip there this past May. Anyway, Michelle and David live in Ballard, and she brought with her a gift for us: “Ballard for Obama” T-shirts! “Wow, what a great idea!” I thought. Then I told my wife, “We should do something like this for south St. Louis.” So I did. I whipped up a design featuring Barack Obama’s official Senate profile photo and put the Bevo Mill and a fleur-de-lis on it. At first, I had “South St. Louis” for Obama, but then changed it to “South Side” on the recommendation of a friend, neighbor and Obama supporter, Ed Martin, because, as he put it, it’s more colloquial. OK, can’t argue with that! “South Side for Obama” it is. House of Eight Legs screenprinting is printing them up and have done two rounds of shirts for me thus far. If you’d like to order one, please use the PayPal button on the official SS4O Myspace page or shoot me an e-mail if you just want to drop by my house with a wad of cash (they’re $12 each). They are also be available at The Royale on S. Kingshighway.
Here’s the design:

And here’s a Photoshopped mockup of what it looks like on a shirt:

Note: If you pay via PayPal, you’ll need to get the shirt directly from me. If you want to pick one up at The Royale, just pay your server there.
Thanks!
July 27th, 2008 — Fashion/Style, Radio
As I’ve posted here before, I was a DJ on KYMC 89.7 FM from early 1984 through mid-1989, hosting a few different music shows including Pipeline Radio Fanzine. The show was originally called Ground Zero but I renamed it in honor of the original Pipeline radio show on KWMU after that program was canceled in September of 1985. “Radio Fanzine” was added to the name in honor of the short-lived punk rock fanzine I put out while in college at CMSU in Warrensburg (also called Pipeline). Sometime in the late ’80s I acquired a KYMC T-shirt, which I had almost completely forgotten about until a couple of years ago, when I found a photo of myself wearing it at my parents’ house in St. Peters in the spring of 1988:

So recently I used that photo to design a new, updated version of the shirt, complete with a Pipeline Radio Fanzine logo on the back! I added the shirt to the TIRC T-shirt shop on SpreadShirt.com and you can order one for yourself here. Here’s what it looks like:

The shirt is $16.99 plus shipping and features Spreadshirt’s awesome, durable “flock printing process” which gives the designs “a velvety feel, like a thin layer of plush.” Much nicer than any screen-printed shirt I have ever seen! I really made the shirt so that I could buy one myself and wear it, but I thought it might be a good idea to leave it up online in case anyone else would want one, too. If you’d like one of these WITHOUT the Pipeline logo on the back, you can have that, too, for just $15.99.

Got my new pair of Vans! These beauties are a little more flowery than you’ll usually see me wearing, but I still really dig ‘em, and besides, they’re perfect for summer! These are a limited re-release of the ‘65 original Duke Kahanamoko’s signature aloha-print slip-on that commemorates Vans’ place in Hawaiian surfing lore. Includes the vulcanized rubber outsole with the heavy waffle tread. No, I’m no surfer, but I’m one surf-lovin’ hodad! By the way, I got these from Swell.com.

I was reading on the RFT’s website recently about how a local woman, Joan Metzler, had sold something like a THOUSAND “Brave Enough to Live in America’s Most Dangerous City” tees when the report came out a little over a year ago that St. Louis was controversially ranked as “America’s Most Dangerous City” by Morgan Quitno Press. You can read it for yourself here. For some reason I was completely oblivious to these shirts when they seemed to be all the buzz locally and it seems a bit silly to buy one now (especially since the most recent report had us dropping to 2nd place, behind Detroit). Guess I wasn’t getting out much back then or something. Anyway, my point is… if she can sell a thousand of those shirts for $20 a pop (and on eBay, no less), wouldn’t you think I might be able to sell maybe TEN of the ones I just designed (see previous post)? If I can sell ten, then I can upload some new designs… not like I have a bunch or anything, but I do have a few more ideas. But so far I haven’t sold ONE yet. So, please, come on… help a brother out!

Some of you may remember that there used to be a phpBB message board over on StLouieLouie.com. I originally set it up back in the fall of 2006 in an effort to create some sort of online discussion about the things that I used to struggle to keep updated in my old Lowlife Guide to St. Louis. My idea was that the Saint Louis Forums could ultimately serve the same purpose as that old, outdated, online guide, but even better, because we could have a multitude of people weighing in on various subjects pertaining to the obscure and unusual local culture for those of us either living in or visiting Saint Louis… offbeat or “underground” local music, arts, restaurants, bars, unique attractions, sports, food, booze, fun things to do, weird stuff, etc. Unfortunately, despite promoting it on various other message boards, email lists, blogs and websites around the area, it just never took off as I’d hoped it would… probably because there were already plenty of other message boards and email lists (not to mention Myspace) where people were already spending a lot of their online time. I was about to pull the plug on the whole thing when my close friend Bill Streeter decided to create a new local social network site that would be connected with Lo-Fi Saint Louis that would basically serve the same purpose, plus offering people the ability to upload and share videos, music, and other media content. Not being fully satisfied with the Saint Louis Forums, I saw this as an easy way out. I would simply redirect the old site URL to Bill’s new site (which he named The Circuit) and encourage people to start using it instead. So I did that sometime last fall, and I do believe it helped Bill grow his network a little, because some people (even though they obviously did not post a lot) were still at least reading the Saint Louis Forums message board, and therefore got whisked away to The Circuit, where I would hope that they would have found the forum there instead.
I was happy to leave the redirect up for that site for a while, hopefully giving all of the former members a chance to catch onto the idea that The Circuit was THEE place to be, so that they could update their bookmarks and get accustomed to checking his site instead of mine. In the meantime, I thought it would be cool to come up with a few eye-catching St. Louis-themed designs that could be put onto T-shirts, kinda like STL-STyLe, but different. Having always been a fan of the St. Louis city flag, my first couple of designs are based on that flag’s art, only slightly modified (look closely at the fleur de lis, which I customized a little to look more like the one the St. Louis Browns used in the 1940s but still retaining much of the design of the classic city flag). So I set up a shop at Spreadshirt.com to sell some of these, and will probably be trying to come up with more designs in the future to add to it. If you have any ideas for more, please let me know!
By the way, in doing a Web search for common (or uncommon) St. Louis phrases, I was directed to a thread on StLouisGasPrices.com’s message board. As I was reading through it, I found a post in which someone had written a complaint about being tired of the phrase “Ask a doctor if _________ is right for you.” I thought that was pretty funny, and funnier still if you put “St. Louis” in the blank! So that’s where the idea for that shirt came from…
The other design on there right now came to me after I kept seeing all of these St. Louis Cardinals T-shirts with “Established 1892″ on them. There were a lot like that! But to the best of my knowledge, I’d never seen a shirt that said anything about St. Louis’ establishment date. That’s when I threw this one together!
There are lots of different shirt styles to choose from, for men, women, and even kids. And I can’t say enough about the great quality of these shirts from Spreadshirt… they really are nicer than screen printed tees. Please check ‘em out and buy one, or two, or three…

Dear friends,
Please consider this a personal invitation to participate in the second annual St. Louis chapter of March Moustache Madness. This organized homage to the badly maligned mustache originated in Baltimore, where it has become increasingly popular each year, exalting and embracing that little lip warmer to a status beyond mere hipster irony. If you are interested in participating, all necessary information follows.
Feel free to spread the word to your friends. Eventually, they’ll thank you.
————————————————-
Step 1. Use the month of February to cultivate a nice growth of facial hair. Full beards are a warm, cozy option for this harsh winter month.
Step 2. On the morning of the first day of March, shave off all excess facial hair to let your mustache shine as a beacon of masculinity and style above your upper lip.
Step 3. Wear your mustache with pride. For the entire month of March.
Step 4. During the last weekend of March, there will be a top secret mustache party. You must have a mustache to get in (this applies to the ladies, too). There will be mustache dances, mustache music, and other assorted mustache-related activities. Prizes will be awarded, libations will be consumed, general rowdiness will ensue.
Step 5. Convince a friend to do it next year.
