Our next TIRC live rock’n'roll event is scheduled for THIS Wednesday night at Off Broadway. Yeah, sorry, I’ve been busy and kinda forgot to post about this show ’til just now. So sue me. But c’mon, it’s not like most of you reading this have that much going on on a Wednesday night in the middle of summer, anyway, right? So it shouldn’t be too difficult to rearrange your schedule to squeeze this one in… I mean, really, when was the last time you got to see a great rock’n'roll band from Puerto Rico… or ANY kind of band from Puerto Rico? So, now’s your chance. And these guys are good, too. If they weren’t, I wouldn’t be messing with getting ‘em a show here and promoting them on my website. Life’s too short to promote crap, that’s my motto… or something. So anyway, you’ve got this great band from Puerto Rico, they’re called Davila 666. My guess is that has something to do with the devil or Satan or whatever. Kind of a goofy name, but whatever. Go easy on ‘em, it’s not easy these days to come up with a band name that’s never been used before. So these guys play the kind of music that Kopper (that’s me, duh) really digs… soulful, trashy garage punk. Sorta like a Latin American version of the Black Lips, for those of you that need me to pigeonhole ‘em for ya. If that sounds like it might be up your alley, then I hope to see you at the show. For more info on these guys, visit their Myspace page. Oh, and if what I’m telling you ain’t good enough to convince you to go, then rest assured that ANY band on In The Red Records is one that you should do everything in your power to see perform live at least once before you buy the farm. That, my friends, you can take to the bank. Old Larry Hardy, my friends, that man knows how to run a record label.

Opening the show will be Left Arm and the Nevermores, so get there early to get adequately LUBED for these rockin’ Puerto Ricans.

By the way, RSVP and help promote this event on Facebook… CLICK HERE. Gracias!

Nevermores’ CD Release Party & TIRC Records Showcase!

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

Saturday May 23 at Deluxe will see three local bands take the stage that each have TIRC Records releases under their belts: The 75s, who released their Stereo EP on TIRC back in February, Left Arm, whose Dissatisoul LP was the best local release of 2008 (if I do say so myself) and who will be releasing their latest 7″ single, “Electric Babies,” very soon, and headlining, veteran St. Louis rock-n-rollers the Nevermores, who will be celebrating the release of their first full-length slab, Nevereverafter. It should be a fun party and a fantastic night of St. Louis-style rock’n'roll, and I hope you’ll come out and support the label and the bands.

Movie Star Junkies – Melville

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

melvillecoverkp3

This one came out not too long ago on Voodoo Rhythm, a label that hit a bit of financial trouble as of late. The band is the Movie Star Junkies, a great broken blues-punk combo from Turin, Italy, whose primary influences are (quite obviously, actually) the Birthday Party and the Gun Club. This particular record, the band’s first full-length LP, happens to be a concept album (no shit!) about Herman Melville of all people, the famous 19th-century writer and adventurer (best known for the classic, Moby-Dick). Thus, the record is full of stories of shipwrecks, illness, religion and love, although I’m not sure exactly how most of them relate directly to Melville’s life. Maybe they don’t, who knows? But what I can tell you is that most of these tracks are incredibly dark, exotic, moody, and crawl along menacingly, full of emotion, lust, anger, fear and desperation. This is a record I can listen to back-to-back for a couple of hours and not get bored with it, and that’s saying something. This shit just sounds IMPORTANT to me. Like, future classic important. I guess time will tell if that actually happens and is considered such, and it would definitely be a lot more probable if they can churn out a couple more masterpieces like this one, so we’ll just have to wait and see if that ever happens. But I, for one, am keeping my fingers crossed. Heh. And here I bet you thought I was a “glass half empty” kinda guy… Shame on you.

I don’t know how many of you remember (or even ever heard) a band from a few years back called the Starvations, but they remind me a LOT of them, in fact, even moreso than the aforementioned influences. I’m also hearing a bit of Turpentine Brothers as well as later-period Deadly Snakes here, too. Think spaghetti westerns meet pirate movies set to music. Ah, hell, why do I even try? Here, just listen to a few choice cuts:

Little Boy (MP3)
Run Away From Me (MP3)
Dead Love Rag (MP3)
Melville (MP3)

By the way, if you dig these sounds, definitely go see the band performing live at Lemmons next month (Saturday April 25) with Kentucky Knife Fight and the Argonauts (yes, admittedly, this is a show I set up… so please excuse the blatant self-promotion). How often do you get to see an Italian blues-punk band up-close and personal? Especially one this good?

The B-Sharps at Deluxe

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Someone just e-mailed me and wanted me to pass along that a band called The B-Sharps will be at Deluxe this Friday night. They’re from Fort Wayne, Indiana. Check out their Myspace page linked below… they sound pretty good. Kinda like ’70s-influenced low-budget punk’n'roll/pub-rock kinda stuff. The Rum Drum Ramblers and The Monads are also on the bill. Should be a fun show.

By the way, I’ve never seen a show at Deluxe, nor have I ever eaten there. Is the food any good? Is it smoky? How’s their live sound, etc.?

The Return of Jason & The Argonauts

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Once again, Jason Kohner has resurrected his old Columbia, MO, garage-rock band The Argonauts. I say “once again” because I believe he attempted to do this a year or so ago but then nothing ever really materialized from it. Nonetheless, it appears they are indeed “back from the grave” and will be playing their first show in twelve years(!) with TIRC favorites The Nevermores at the Ten Mile House (9420 Gravois in Affton) on Saturday, February 7. This band dates back quite a long time. In fact, they predate such long-time St. Louis rockers, The Cripplers (and include two members of that band). Here’s a bio from the band’s Myspace page:

The Argonauts are a 60’s style garage punk band in St. Louis, Missouri. Although all members are from St. Louis, the band originally formed in Columbia, Missouri back in the mid 90’s. The Argonauts consist of Jason Kohner (lead vocals, guitar), Nate Reeves (lead guitar), Tim Hopmeier (bass, vocals), and Dave Devine (drums). Kohner and Reeves, fresh out of The Fabulous Hustlers (a garage combo including Steve Mace and Steve Rager of The Untamed Youth), were old friends with Hopmeier (then with The Neanderthals) and hooked up with Devine (formerly with Erector Set). The rest is history. Opening for acts such as Southern Culture On The Skids and Rocket From The Crypt, The Argonauts quickly became one of Columbia’s most popular garage bands of the 1990s. For a brief stint Dave Devine left the group and was replaced by Chris Raymond on drums before they finally disbanded. Devine and Hopmeier would go on to form The Cripplers, which Raymond would later join on guitar. However, all the members eventually moved back to St. Louis and are now back together playing some ferocious garage rock and love songs for bastards. Maximum Garage R&R!!!

Listen to the blistering covers of some of your garage-rock favorites on their Myspace page. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this show.

Oh yeah, and John Ebert made a flyer, too. Pass it on…

Screw U Burly-Q Premieres Tonight!

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008

Lola van Ella is bringing her fantastic burlesque show to The Wedge tonight for the premier of a fun show with a very South City vibe that will combine punk/rock’n'roll with a grittier, edgier burlesque act. This monthly event will feature guest performers along with a special guest band. Screw U Burly-Q debuts tonight, featuring Siren (glam rock drag queen), Foxy la Feelion (sultry but with a real rock’n'roll edge), Sturdy Gurlesque (a totally hot and awesome fire performer), Gravity Plays Favorites (an amazing pole acrobatic duo), plus the music of TIRC Records’ own LEFT ARM. The Wedge is a new rock n’ roll bar/pizza joint now open at the intersection of Virginia, Compton and Bates in South St. Louis. Admission is $12. Doors open at 8:00 p.m., show is at 9:00. 21 & up only.

St. Louis Music Funeral

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

LOUD Technologies, the company that purchased St. Louis Music in 2005, has closed this long-time (since 1922) locally based company, a designer and distributor of Ampeg, Crate, Dan Armstrong, and other top brands of musicians gear. In May 2007, Loud closed the Ampeg and Crate engineering department in St. Louis, preferring to have new models designed by their own engineers, as well as an Asian engineering group. This followed Loud ceasing manufacturing of Ampeg and Crate at the Yellville, AR, manufacturing facility, outsourcing the manufacturing to contract manufacturers in Asia, and firing the entire sales staff. As if all of this wasn’t bad enough, Loud has also decided to put the final nail in the SLM coffin by eliminating the distribution facility.

Hence, some of the former employees of St. Louis Music are throwing a funeral/party on Saturday December 13 at the Kat Club, 1440 North Broadway, next to Shady Jack’s. Doors open at 7:00 p.m., the cover is $5 and is restricted to 21 & up. The event will feature bands whose employees are part of the SLM family, featuring The Trip Daddys, Giants in the Sky and TBA. Steve Dachroeden is leading the eulogy as well as putting together some pretty cool shit to give away, rumored to be Ampeg and Dan Armstrong shtuff and maybe some of the platinum records that have been given to the company by sponsored artists. There will be two tattoo artists and a mobile soul food unit and I believe PBR is donating beer. Hopefully I’ll have more details to come.

ANYONE can come to this; this event is for past and (until recently) present employees of St. Louis Music/Loud Technologies, as well as SLME. It is ALSO for anyone who has worked with SLM, used or admired Crate, Ampeg, Dan Armstrong, etc., as well as ANYONE who is sad to see a St. Louis company that started eighty-six years ago die.
