Why You Should Switch to CREDO Mobile

Friday, January 30th, 2009

The first week or so of the Obama administration has shown us what a huge difference a President can make—but the tough battles are still to come. On global warming, job creation, universal healthcare and other issues, our new president is going to need our help.

To support the social change we need, I’ve been taking actions online recently with a company called CREDO Mobile. CREDO is a mobile phone company just like AT&T or Verizon—except, unlike AT&T or Verizon, CREDO actually fights with us for progressive change. (Also unlike AT&T, CREDO didn’t give money to McCain/Palin and Bush/Cheney, but that’s another story.)

CREDO’s a pretty great company – they give 1% of their revenues away to amazing non-profits like Doctors Without Borders, and they’ve given away over $60 million over the last twenty years. They also do progressive activism on issues like protecting the environment and working to end the war in Iraq.

So why am I telling you about some phone company? Because they offered us a pretty sweet deal. Here’s how it works:

If you sign up to be a CREDO customer, they’ll cover the cancellation fee on your existing mobile contract and give you a free phone, plus they’ll give me $100 for referring you. Pretty good, right? You can get all the details here.

If you’re ready to sign up, just do the following:

  • First, call 1-877-76CREDO.
  • Second, give them this special offer code: 800222
  • Finally, let them know I sent you by giving them my personalized coupon code WWTBP

Thanks!

Help Voodoo Rhythm Records

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

This was posted on the GaragePunk Hideout yesterday:

APPEAL FOR FUNDS

Hello, this might be a bit of a strange e-mail. I have treated bands very fairly since I’ve started Voodoo Rhythm and have given them their records for cost price so that they could make a solid profit when selling their records on tour (we all know payouts are lousy nowadays). I did approach the SUISA (Copyright Company, musicians’ union) and informed them of the nature of my agreement with the bands.

Unfortunately I never put it in writing.

Now that is exactly the problem: The SUISA demands payback of a total of 42,500 Swiss Franks (roughly $38,000 US). Basically they want money for productions that had long been settled. The bitter irony is that bands of course prefer free copies of their album, yet the SUISA is oblivious to this fact and demand the money within 30 days. If we cannot meet their demands we might have to shut down business, since it is completely impossible for us to raise that kind of money. Therefore we kindly ask for your support. Even if we can pay we will not be able to offer the bands the same deal as before, in spite of the fact that they would much rather get free copies from us as opposed to SUISA money (especially American bands since they don’t get any SUISA money at all).

We hope you can help us. We don’t want to quit, we want to resume or work and our journey. Please transfer funds to the following account and forward this message.

Sincerely,
Reverend Beat-Man
Voodoo Rhythm Records

Voodoo Rhythm is not only one of the few remaining truly KICK-ASS trash-punk-blues-rock’n'roll labels left on the planet, but I also consider Beat-Man a personal friend of mine, so please, if you can help out, do so. Send PayPal payments to info (at) voodoorhythm (dot) com. Thanks!

The Return of Jason & The Argonauts

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

Once again, Jason Kohner has resurrected his old Columbia, MO, garage-rock band The Argonauts. I say “once again” because I believe he attempted to do this a year or so ago but then nothing ever really materialized from it. Nonetheless, it appears they are indeed “back from the grave” and will be playing their first show in twelve years(!) with TIRC favorites The Nevermores at the Ten Mile House (9420 Gravois in Affton) on Saturday, February 7. This band dates back quite a long time. In fact, they predate such long-time St. Louis rockers, The Cripplers (and include two members of that band). Here’s a bio from the band’s Myspace page:

The Argonauts are a 60’s style garage punk band in St. Louis, Missouri. Although all members are from St. Louis, the band originally formed in Columbia, Missouri back in the mid 90’s. The Argonauts consist of Jason Kohner (lead vocals, guitar), Nate Reeves (lead guitar), Tim Hopmeier (bass, vocals), and Dave Devine (drums). Kohner and Reeves, fresh out of The Fabulous Hustlers (a garage combo including Steve Mace and Steve Rager of The Untamed Youth), were old friends with Hopmeier (then with The Neanderthals) and hooked up with Devine (formerly with Erector Set). The rest is history. Opening for acts such as Southern Culture On The Skids and Rocket From The Crypt, The Argonauts quickly became one of Columbia’s most popular garage bands of the 1990s. For a brief stint Dave Devine left the group and was replaced by Chris Raymond on drums before they finally disbanded. Devine and Hopmeier would go on to form The Cripplers, which Raymond would later join on guitar. However, all the members eventually moved back to St. Louis and are now back together playing some ferocious garage rock and love songs for bastards. Maximum Garage R&R!!!

Listen to the blistering covers of some of your garage-rock favorites on their Myspace page. Trust me, you won’t want to miss this show.

Oh yeah, and John Ebert made a flyer, too. Pass it on…

Kudos to whoever the hell braved the cold early this morning to carve out the following message in the snow at Ballpark Village. I mean, it’s obviously nothing we all don’t already know, but it’s good to remind folks once in a while, ya know, lest they forget.

Unreliable Jerks

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

There’s this kid that lives over in Collinsville, Illinois, named Adam that’s been working on getting a rock’n'roll band together for quite a while now. Well, not too long ago Adam posted on the TIRC list that his band had recorded some songs for what they called the “Undead Surf Party” EP and was looking for a place to post them. I suggested making a page for his band on The Circuit and uploading the songs there, right? Well, he did… and you can visit that page and listen to the tracks here. At first I wasn’t all that impressed—I thought the songs were decent enough and they were definitely on the right track, and with a little work they could develop into a pretty cool local trashy rock’n'roll band. In other words, not a bad first effort but I was sorta witholding judgment until they’d seasoned a bit and I got to hear more. Well, the other day he sent me a new MP3 of his band doing a tribute to Stooges guitarist, Ron Asheton (who you probably heard passed away earlier this month) at one of their recent live shows, which turns out to be a pretty great version of “I Wanna Be Your Dog.” I thought it was a damned fine tune and thought I’d share it with y’all. So give it a listen below, and if you’d like to book the Unreliable Jerks, get in touch with Adam (a.k.a. “Dr. Flesh”) thru the aforementioned page on The Circuit.

Blip.fm

Tuesday, January 27th, 2009

I’ve been digging the hell out of this site lately. Basically, if you haven’t checked it out and joined up yet, what you do is create a profile for yourself and then start “blipping” songs. The way it’s set up is very similar to Twitter (in fact, you can also set it to automatically send updates to your Twitter account each time you blip). You basically invite people to start following your blips (listed as “Listeners”) and then you seek out other people to follow (as “Favorite DJs”). And you give each other “props” whenever someone you follow blips a song you happen to really dig. You simply use the search function to search for a song you’d like to share with the rest of the world. The search function somehow searches all linked MP3s on the Web for your song, and if it’s out there (and indexable on search engines, naturally), it’ll find it. Now, this poses an obvious dilemma: Not all songs are obviously “out there” for you to find and blip. Well, there’s a way to fix that! If you have access to a server (like if you own your own domain, for example) you can simply create a directory and upload some of your favorite MP3s to it, and then go into the “settings” area, click “music” and then simply enter the URL of the song file, which will add it to their searchable database. Cool, huh? The only thing cooler than this is having your own podcast… which is why I’m not spending a whole hell of a lot of time uploading songs and then blipping them. There’s really no point in doing that if I’m doing my podcast. But for those of you NOT doing a podcast, it’s hella cool (and IMHO better more fun that Pandora or Last.fm), so check it out and start DJing.

What ever happened to… the TIRC Podcast?

Monday, January 26th, 2009

I realized today that some of you may be wondering why I stopped doing the TIRC Podcast. Well, for much the same reason that I had to stop doing my old radio show, I just don’t have time. I’m lucky to pump out a new episode of Savage Kick every three weeks, much less do another one, as much as I would like to. I had tried to dump it off onto my friend and TIRC Productions cohort, Jason Potter, but he flaked out after just one episode. I can’t say I blame the guy… he’s busy, too, with his own band and family-type stuff. So where does that leave us? Well, without a fucking podcast host, obviously. I don’t know about you, but I still think St. Louis could really use a great local rock’n'roll podcast. And I would be willing to let you post it right here on this very blog if you’d like, too. But we just need to find some poor sap who’s going to commit to doing it regularly, consistently, at least once every month or two. If you think you’d be up for the task, get in touch. I’d be happy to help get you on your way and give you all the tips and whatnot you could possibly need to get you on your merry way producing your very own local music show. OR let’s say you don’t want the show hosted here at all. You want to do it all yourself, name the show, post it on your own blog and take all the credit. That’s fine, too. Get in touch!
